I am thrilled to be hosting debut author and my Month9Books pub-sister Dorothy Dreyer on the blog today. Dorothy is a wonderfully talented new author. If you like creepy YA, her book My Sister’s Reaper is a must read!
Sixteen-year-old Zadie’s first mistake was telling the boy she liked she could bring her dead sister back to life. Her second mistake was actually doing it.
When Zadie accidentally messes with the Reaper’s Rite that should have claimed her sister Mara, things go horribly wrong. Mara isn’t the same anymore—Zadie isn’t even sure she’s completely human, and to top it off, a Reaper is determined to collect Mara’s soul no matter what. Now Zadie must figure out how to defeat her sister’s Reaper, or let Mara die … this time for good.
Doesn’t that sound awesome? I asked Dorothy a few questions and she was kind enough to answer.
1) Why did you decide to write YA?
I love YA. When I was a teenager, it was natural for me to write from a teenager’s standpoint. As I got older, I tended to stay in that mindset with my writing. At one point, I tried to write an adult novel, but it just wasn’t working for me. I’m much more comfortable writing young adult. It’s fun and exciting!
2) What was your favorite chapter or scene to write and why?
In MY SISTER’S REAPER, Zadie accidentally brings her sister Mara back to life. One scene had always been on my mind when I imagined the book: the first night Mara comes home. In my head, it was spooky and creepy. I really wanted to convey that feeling to the readers. I hope it worked!
3) Why should we pick up your book when it releases?
My book is a combination of young adult paranormal, thriller and horror, with bits of romance and teenage drama mixed in. Oh, and magic. That’s got to draw you in, right? If you like an exciting, spooky read, this may be the book for you. Plus, you’ve got two hot guys in it. I’d love to hear who’s Team Gavin and who’s Team Chase.
4) Besides your own book, what debut title are you most excited about for 2013?
I’m currently reading PRETTY DARK NOTHING! So spooky and cool. Too bad I can’t skip work so I can stay home and gobble it up in one sitting.
5) List 3 books you just recently read and would recommend?
DIVERGENT and INSURGENT by Veronica Roth. Awesome reads. I can’t wait until third title in the series comes out. I also just finished A SHIMMER OF ANGELS by Lisa M. Basso. Very cool. I tried so hard not to fall for the “bad boy,” but it couldn’t be helped.
6) What do you do when you are not writing?
Working, helping my kids with homework, avoiding housework, catching up on reading and TV shows we don’t get here in Germany, and once in a while crocheting.
7) Do you ever write in your PJ’s?
Yes! I love those days when I don’t have anything else to do but write. I need more of those.
8) If your book was made into a TV series or Movie, what actors would you like to see playing your characters?
I don’t know if it’s every author’s dream to have their book made into a movie, but it’s definitely on my bucket list. But whom to cast? Well, I have an idea.
Here is my dream cast for MY SISTER’S REAPER:
Kelli Berglund as Zadie
Douglas Booth as Gavin
Jeremy Sumpter as Chase
Aimee Teergarden as Mara (normal Mara and “zombie” Mara)
Sarah Hyland as Naomi
The harder pick would be an actress to play Lilura. But it would have to be someone awesome at being snarky. The rest would be makeup and costume anyway. 😉
9) An actor or a book character you have a crush on –
I have a huge crush on Ewan McGregor. Ever since Moulin Rouge, he’s been at the top of my actor crush list. And judging from interviews, he seems like a great guy.
10) If you and your main character were having dinner together, what would each of you order for desert?
I would order an ice cream sundae with all the toppings. I shouldn’t, but since we’re speaking hypothetically, I totally would. Zadie would probably order Cheesecake. She strikes me as a cheesecake kind of girl. Though I suspect she’d be eyeing my sundae with envy.

I’m a Philippine-born American living in Germany with my husband and two teens.
I write young adult books that usually have some element of magic or the supernatural in them. I also like to read those kinds of books. Aside from reading, I like movies, chocolate, take-out, coffee, traveling, and having fun with my friends and family. I’ve also been known to make a pretty sweet cupcake.
I tend to sing sometimes, too, so keep me away from your Karaoke bars.
I’m reading this now and loving it. 🙂
Yay! So glad!
Great interview! LOVE Ewan McGregor 😀 congrats on your book!
Awesome interview!! I already wanted to read the book, but with all the spookiness it’s moving up on my TBR list!!!!
Ewan McGregor is MINE, MINE, MINE!!! I’ve had a thing for him ever since Moulin Rouge, too!! I do like your hottie choices, though. Not too shabby!
😉 We can share.

Yay, thanks, Ednah!
Hi Dorothy! As you already know, I enjoyed your book very much and want to play Lilura when it hits the big screen! OK, I will admit, I might look look the part exactly (thank you for saying that) but I would love to be made up to look like what I imagined her to be in my mind. I recommend your book to everyone I meet! Congrats, and I look forward to reading the sequel! BRAVO! Well done on your first book!
