Here are my best and worst moments of the week. What about you?
The Worst:
Taking the train to my passport interview in Glasgow and walking from the station to the address listed on their website:
Only to be told on arrival that the passport office had moved 9 months ago to this address:
This is a fifteen minute walk and I now have 10 minutes to get to my interview or risk it being cancelled and my passport application being revoked. Thanks to my trusty phone sat nav, and speed walking, I made it in time. (they were running late anyway, surprise.) Interview was strange, but I think it went well. Should receive my British passport in 10 working days.
But that wasn’t the last of my Glasgow adventure. On the way home, I ended up on the wrong train! Oops! I did finally make it home safe and sound though.
The Best:
The best part of my weekย and of the Glasgow adventure, was spending 2 hours here:
That’s four stories worth of book bliss right there. Oh yeah!
And the best and weirdest thing that happened to me at the Glasgow Waterstones?ย Having this book thrown at me by the resident poltergeist. That’s right, I said poltergeist, as in the invisible dead kind.
A journey through gangland mayhem in Glasgow? Not at book I would ever read. The poltergeist doesn’t know my tastes at all. Was it trying to send me a message or did it just wanted to recommend one of its favourite books?
Think I’m crazy? Seriously,ย the book flew off the shelfย that was three feet away from me and landed at my feet. I hadn’t been anywhere near that shelf nor had anyone else since I’d been in that part of the store. I picked it up to put it back where it belonged and one of the clerks came up behind me and told me that often happens on the first floor. Wicked! Could it simply been gravity or something easily explained by the natural world? Sure, but I prefer to think it was a book loving ghost.
Have you ever had a close encounter of the creepy kind? What was your best and worst moment this week?
I had a best/worst moment tied into one last weekend. I started Song of Achilles, by Madeline Miller. The opening is so freakin’ awesome–lyrical and great story-telling wrapped together. I spent a whole day submerged in this magical prose. Why worst? At the moment I’m trying to redo my own opening, and I’ve rarely felt so inadequate.
On a brighter note, I spent my birthday with my wife in a fun restort town. Cool/creepy encounter at the bookstore! ๐
Sounds like I need to add Song of Achilles to my to be read list. I know what you mean about certain books making you feel inadequate. I felt a little like that reading GRAVE MERCY. Even thought it’s nothing like PDN, her story telling was so beautiful I fel envious! Glad you had such a great birthday, Vaughn and thanks for commenting as always ๐
My worst was taking my son to the audiologist and discovering he has mild to moderate hearing loss. We’re hoping a round of strong antibiotics will clear up the fluid in his ears and we’ll go from there.
What I’ve loved about this week is seeing my baby sister and feeling that flow of words that feels like magic. Doesn’t happen often, so I’ll take it and work hard.
Tromping around Scotland with you is very high on my bucket list!
I think my daughter had a friend who was a little more than imaginary when she was two. One day, she was laughing and throwing a ball. It hit nothing I could see, but always bounced back to her. Chills.
I love coming here. Great place, Heather. ๐
Tonia, I hope his hearing loss clears up! That is a worst. As for your best, feeling the flow of words is an amazing feeling, not to metion spending time with family. I would give anything to see my sisters right now. Thanks for sharing your best and worse with me!
I think children can often see things adults can’t. It’s a bit creepy that someone or something was throwing the ball back to her. Total chills! Was this in a particular house? Did just stop when she got older?
I used to see things when I was young, but they weren’t nice things. ๐ Glad I outgrew that!
You’re welcome in Scotland anytime. We can go Ghost hunting together ๐
I believe that too about children. We lived in an apartment at the time, but she would carry on conversations with her friend after we moved. Doors would pop open or I’d get up in the middle of the night thinking I heard one of the girls playing. It just stopped as she got older and she has no memory now-but very vivid dreams.
I think that’s why I’ve written a ghost story. I believe they’re around.
Would love to go ghost-hunting with you. Scottish ghosts are probably better because they’ve had more practice than American ones. ๐
